Grandma Champion's Holiday Cranberry Relish

There is something I like to call the "Grandma phenomenon." It's that moment when something hits your adult taste buds and you are immediately ripped from the present and are transferred back in time. In that moment, you are magically back at the little breakfast table in your Grandma's kitchen staring wide-eyed at delicious food in front of you. You are struck by the talented hands that created something out of what seemingly was once "nothing" and with ease. 

Sound familiar? There's just something about a Grandma's cooking that you just can't shake. It stays with you forever. And while our grandparents cannot, the memories we've created and (thank Goodness) their recipes can. We can honor them during our holidays and celebrations by sharing this little bit of heart-warming nostalgia during the most wonderful time of the year. 

This year it is my mom's first holiday season without either of her parents. I want to do something special for her to ease her mind and help her realize that they will always, in some way, be with us. This year, I'm making my Grandmother's cranberry relish. It's fresh, tart and makes every single bite of turkey taste just like it used to at Grandma's table. 

The ingredients are simple:

  • 1 package of fresh cranberries
  • 3 apples, cored and chopped (leave the peels on)
  • 2 oranges, peeled and seeded
  • 2 cups of granulated sugar 

In a food processor, chop the apples, oranges and cranberries. Transfer to a bowl, stir in sugar and chill in the refrigerator overnight. 

I have a 7-cup food processor so I had to process the relish in batches. This works great for me because I have a tiny kitchen. A tiny kitchen does not mean tiny results! If you are like me, and don't have space or the need for giant kitchen gadgets, then this is the perfect food processor for you! 

I'm so excited to share this recipe with you. It's perfect for the holiday season and doesn't just go great with turkey. It's delicious over French toast, with yogurt and granola and mixed in pancake batter. I hope you give it a whirl (in your food processor!). Haha! Happy Thanksgiving!
