Homemade Room Spray

Multipurpose items have really helped my husband and I de-clutter our home. Focusing on how we can use what we already own and living intentionally has helped our bank accounts, too. Even making my own extracts has opened up a multitude of possibilities. This week I wanted to step out of the kitchen for a moment and show you the versatility of lemon infused vodka.

Allow me to introduce this multi-faceted workhorse, homemade room spray. Yes, the intention is for this simple recipe to help you freshen up a room…but I assure you, that’s not the only thing it has going on. Let’s focus on what’s in it, then we’ll address some exciting uses for this versatile homemade room spray!

Here’s what you’ll need:

16 oz. glass spray bottle - I found mine on Amazon, reasonably priced and perfect for this project!

1 cup distilled water

1/2 cup vodka infused with lemon - The lemon “extract” that I made in a previous blog is exactly what you’re looking for…easy to make, easy on the cash money, especially if you always have lemons on hand as we do.

10 drops of essential oils - With citrus, I try to add in something earthy, to balance it all out. This time around I used 5 drops of lemon to pack an extra punch and 5 drops of lavender to mellow it out and add a cozy feeling.

What to do:

Funnel the water and infused vodka, sans lemon pieces, into the glass spray bottle. Drop in your essential oils, put the lid on and gently swirl. You’re ready to use your homemade room spray!

Uses:

  • Room spray - Obviously, my first focus is to have an easy to make, reasonably priced room spray to freshen the air in our home. Sure, it could get expensive, but I never buy citrus just to make the cleaner. I use the rinds from whatever citrus we are currently snacking on, it doesn’t have to be lemon!

  • Fabric Refresher - This homemade room spray is perfect for anywhere in your home. Today, I freshened up our living room and couch. Yes, that’s right! I used it on our couch.

  • Quilting - It will not hurt your fabric, in fact, a lot of quilters prefer to use vodka and essential oils for starching fabric…now THAT is versatility! (I do suggest always testing on surfaces before you go gung-ho. And I’d probably skip using this on painted drywall, I’m willing to bet it removes the paint.) We can’t stop there, though.

  • Cleaning - This homemade room spray triples up as a great cleaning spray for nonporous surfaces. Think faucets, toilets, bathtubs, glass stove tops, etc. Because of the ethanol in the alcohol and the antimicrobial properties of lemon, you can use this spray as a natural disinfectant spray.

  • Hand Sanitizer - This means that you could also use it as hand sanitizer. Just get smaller spray bottles to carry in handbags, diaper bags, and fanny packs. They are making a comeback, people!

I encourage you to try different oils but stick with the lemon infused vodka, there are beneficial properties that you don’t want to miss out on in this homemade room spray. I hope you enjoy this homemade room spray and all of it’s potential in your home.
